What kind of people do you serve?
No one usually wants to consider themselves “typical” or “average”, so we don’t really want to refer to a typical client. So let’s think of this in terms of who can gain the most value from the type of work we do. We create and implement income and investment plans for our clients, which many advisors do as well. But we set ourselves apart by generally put more time and attention into tax planning than many other firms. Affluent families with investment portfolios of $500k to $10M who are nearing or already in retirement usually have options in how and when to receive income from their portfolios. These options give you the opportunity to use legitimate tax saving strategies that are often not raised by advisors and easily missed by DIY investors.
Why did you start Advanced Wealth Advice?
I sold an investment advisory practice nearly 10 years ago thinking that I would go a completely new direction. Funny thing though…I really missed working directly with families that want to be the best stewards they can with what they’ve been given. Operating independently from large corporate firms allows me the freedom to offer you exactly the types of products and services you need. If our financial planning process reveals that you need a specialized or unique type of product, I can go find and implement it for you without constraints from a large and impersonal organization.
Are you a fiduciary?
Yes. But frankly it is beside the point to me. I’ve always felt the professional and moral obligation to do the right thing for you as a client. And I’ve always tried to operate by putting your best interests ahead of my own – which is the definition of being a fiduciary. But if the legality of fiduciary duty is important to you yes, Advanced Wealth Advice does readily take on that responsibility.
Is my portfolio safe working with a small independent firm like yours?
Here’s the main thing you should know about how we work: You maintain ownership and control over all of your investment accounts. We will never ask you to transfer ownership or custody (safekeeping) of your investment accounts to our firm. The process works like this:
1) You open brokerage accounts with one of the custodians we work with. The accounts are in your name and you have full access to them. You may already have your assets with one of these firms.
2) You authorize the brokerage company to take instructions from us to make trades on your behalf.
3) You have digital access and can look at your account(s) any time, and will receive quarterly or monthly statements from the brokerage company that will show you all the activity we’ve conducted for you.
4) If for any reason in the future we cannot continue to manage your account, you simply take over the account and have a different advisor assist you going forward.
Why should I use an advisor when I could do it myself?
That is a fair question that you could ask about almost any professional you hire: A CPA, mechanic, electrician – as well as a financial advisor.
Education/Experience: Your AWA advisor has decades of experience researching and investing in an array of securities, implementing financial plans for affluent families – in addition to advanced finance degrees. And that body of knowledge grows as we continue to keep abreast of new trends and investment options.
Tools: We maintain subscriptions of a number of different types of research and planning tools that enable us to advise our clients based on analytics – not our intuition alone. These tools enable us to gain levels of insight into investments and financial situations far beyond what an average investor has the time, patience, or tools to acquire.
Disciplined Processes: AWA has certain proprietary processes we use to manage client portfolios in a disciplined manner that have historically added incremental return over traditional buy and hold approaches.
Synthesis of income planning, tax allocation, and investment management: AWA uses all of the things mentioned above to bring clients a comprehensive approach to using their resources as efficiently as possible. And we try to share it in everyday language without the investment “jargon”.
According to a study by Vanguard (“Advisors’ Alpha 2025”), a high-quality advisor can add up to 3% or more of annual after-tax return to an individual’s portfolio performance. Our own experience with clients has shown this to be true as well.
